How to resize images on Windows
Short answer: Paint resizes one image at a time; PowerToys Image Resizer does batches but re-compresses quietly with few options. For controlled batch work — “all 1920 px wide”, “fit into 1280×720”, “half size” — use a free tool like Image Resizer: four modes, a JPEG quality slider, and results written next to the originals as name_800x450.jpg.
The built-in options and their catches
Paint — open, Resize, set pixels or percent, save. Fine for one image; hopeless for forty, and it always re-encodes your JPEG.
PowerToys Image Resizer — right-click → Resize pictures, pick a preset. Convenient, but: it overwrites or duplicates in unclear ways depending on settings, offers no percent/fit preview per file, and gives no report of what actually happened.
Photos app — “Resize” exists for one image; no batches, no control over quality.
Method 4: Image Resizer — batch, predictable, originals safe
Download free — ImageResizer-Setup.exe
- Add images. Any number of JPEG, PNG, WebP or BMP files — the list is remembered between runs.
- Choose the mode. By width (the classic “make them all 1920 wide”), by height, fit into a box (shrink-only, keeps aspect), or by percent. JPG quality is a slider; PNG/WebP outputs stay lossless.
- Press Resize. Every file gets a line like
6000×4000 → 1920×1280 · 4.1 MB → 812 KB · −80%. Outputs land next to the originals with the new size in the name — nothing is overwritten, ever.
Which size do you actually need?
| Where it goes | Sensible setting |
|---|---|
| Website / blog | width 1600–1920 px |
| E-mail attachment | width 800–1200 px, JPG quality 80–90 |
| Chat / forum | fit into 1280×1280 |
| Profile picture | fit into 512×512 |
| Halve the folder | percent 50 |
Resampling is cubic — the standard that keeps photo gradients smooth and text edges clean. A JPEG at quality 90 is visually identical to the original for almost any purpose.
FAQ
Does resizing lose quality?
Downscaling always resamples pixels, but cubic interpolation keeps it clean and PNG/WebP outputs are lossless. The real quality trap is repeated re-saving — which is why this tool never touches your originals.
Can I resize without installing anything?
Windows' built-in Paint and Photos handle single images; batch needs a tool. Image Resizer is a small installer with no background services and no admin beyond the standard install.
How do I resize a whole folder?
Add every image from the folder (multi-select in the file dialog), choose a mode, press once. The list is kept for the next session too.
