How to find and remove empty folders on Windows

Short answer: Windows has no built-in empty folder finder. A free tool like Empty Folder Cleaner scans your folders, lists every directory without files — nested empty chains included — and sends the ones you tick to the Recycle Bin.

Why empty folders pile up

Empty folders are the quiet half of disk clutter:

  • you move a photo library to an external drive and three levels of empty directories stay behind;
  • you uninstall a program manually and AppData\Vendor\Product\Cache chains remain;
  • you organize files into new folders and the old ones stay empty;
  • you extract an archive, move its contents and keep the empty skeleton;
  • some apps create a folder per project, per day or per export — hundreds of them.

A single empty folder is harmless. A few hundred across a drive make navigation slower and backups bigger.

The usual workarounds (and their problems)

Manually in File Explorer: open every folder and check whether it is empty — fine for five folders, hopeless for a whole drive.

PowerShell one-liner: there is a well-known command that deletes every empty folder:

Get-ChildItem -Recurse -Directory | Where-Object { !$_.GetFileSystemInfos() } | Remove-Item

The problems: it runs before you can look at the list, it deletes permanently (no Recycle Bin), and a naive “has no children” check misses or overreaches on nested cases. One typo in the path and the wrong tree is gone.

Method 3: Empty Folder Cleaner — free, with a checklist

Empty Folder Cleaner does it safely:

  1. Add folders. One or several scan roots; “Skip system folders” keeps Windows, Program Files and AppData out of the way.
  2. Press “Find empty folders”. A folder counts as empty when its whole subtree contains no files — so a dead chain project\cache\temp is found completely, not just the deepest level. Unreadable folders are skipped and never deleted.
  3. Tick and recycle. Nothing is selected automatically. Selected folders go to the Recycle Bin through the Windows shell — if you change your mind, restore them from there.

Good habits after the cleanup

  • Empty folders reappear after every uninstall or file shuffle — a scan every few months keeps it tidy.
  • After removing duplicate files (guide), leftover groups of empty folders are common: clean those too.
  • Check before recycling a folder if the app that created it is still installed — some apps recreate their cache automatically, others do not.

FAQ

Does Windows have a built-in empty folder finder?

No. File Explorer cannot filter folders by “contains no files”, and PowerShell solutions delete permanently with no preview.

Are nested empty chains deleted?

Yes — when a folder’s entire subtree has no files, the parent counts as empty too, and the whole chain is offered together.

Is it safe?

Deleted folders go to the Recycle Bin and can be restored. System folders are skipped by default and unreadable folders are never touched.
